About the ISSPA

The International Software and Systems Process Association (ISSPA) is a professional association for software engineers, systems engineers, and other professionals with a special interest in process as a distinguished field of research, development, application, and improvement.

ISSPA has often with with other groups in organizing, sponsoring, and conducting events. In recent years ISSPA has worked with ACM and IEEE, the International Conference on Software Engineering and the International Conference on Global Software Engineering, the Institute of Software of the Chinese Academy of Science, the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute, and (for ICSSP 2023) CSIRO’s Data61 unit, the data and digital specialist arm of Australia’s national science agency. ISSPA will welcome the opportunity to work with other organizations in future events.

Organization

The ISSPA has been registered as a not-for-profit Virginia nonstock corporation since 2016.  It has a Board of Directors comprising its Officers (President, Treasurer, and Secretary) and a variable number of At-large Directors. It maintains a list of some 200 Associate members with whom it communicates periodically regarding ISSPA-sponsored events and other matters relating to its mission. Mission

The ISSPA’s mission is to advance software and other processes in science, technology, and practice. It recognizes the broad significance of process across science, engineering, business, government, and society.

Technical Perspective

The foundational principles that inform the ISSPA’s technical efforts are that:

  • Processes are a kind of software.
  • Software engineering affords unique capabilities for understanding, supporting, and improving processes.
  • Software and systems engineering offer tools and methods that can be applied to the study and development of processes, both within these disciplines and beyond.

Additionally, the ISSPA understands that many processes are multidimensional in their influences, concerns, and impacts. Hence, it recognizes that contributions to its mission may originate from many different disciplines.

Activity

The ISSPA’s principal activity has been to oversee and participate in the organization and conduct of an annual series of technical conferences: the International Conference on Software and Systems Process (ICSSP). These conferences have been held regularly since 2011 in locations around the world. (A predecessor to ISSPA, the International Software Process Association, organized conferences and workshops prior to 2017.) The proceedings of these conferences have been published by major publishers of software engineering research, including ACM Press, IEEE Computer Society Press, and Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science.

Policies

As a professional association centered in computer science and engineering, the ISSPA has adopted the applicable policies of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) regarding conduct, integrity, inclusivity, and nondiscrimination.
